How to Avoid Overheating Your Car and What to Do When it Actually Overheats

Overheating Car Prevention
Prevent Your Car from Overheating

If you ever saw the temperature gauge is all the way up to the “H” while driving your car, it means that your car is about to overheat.  Each time your car overheats, it causes damage to the engine and the costs to repair overheating damages are very expensive.  Here are a few tips on how to avoid overheating:
Check your Antifreeze.   If your car is not circulating antifreeze properly, it may cause the engine to overheat.  Antifreeze keeps the engine temperature at a desired level for your engine: both during summer and cold winter (preventing the water to freeze).  Always check underneath your car while it’s parked and see if you notice any leaks in puddles or just simply look for stains while your car has been parked for several hours.  It might just be your antifreeze leaking, which will cause a lower level circulation to the engine, thus, causing overheating.
Sometimes, though, you may not notice an antifreeze leak by looking underneath the car.  Therefore, it’s always a good idea to regularly check antifreeze levels, making sure it’s at a proper level stated by your owner’s manual.
If you have ever found yourself in a situation, where your car is about to overheat (that’s when your temperature gauge nears a high,) immediately turn up the heater.  Running the heater will cool down the engine temporarily and the temperature gauge should drop slightly, or may even return to a normal level. Safely park your car and turn it off.   You can also open the hood to have the air cool the engine, but NEVER open the radiator pressure cap at any circumstance, while the engine is hot.  The hot radiator fluid will cause severe burns.
You may also add some water to the antifreeze tank, if you know where it is located.  This will also cool the engine by circulating cool water through it.
If you ever choose to run the car while the temperature gauge is on a high level, be prepared for some costly repairs cause by the overheating damage. Turn off your air-conditioning, as it adds more pressure to your engine.   However, you might have to tow your car to your nearest auto repair shop to have it looked ASAP, at after driving it for a long time while the temperature gauge is on high.

Windows Open and Air Conditioning Off?

Air conditioning on or off
Air Conditioning ON or OFF?

Is it More Economical Opening your Car Window than Using Car Air Conditioning? Well, in hot summer days, people like to open their car windows and cruise through to their destination with the wind blowing in their faces.  However, there are people who actually DO mind the outside air and would most likely prefer to use their car’s air conditioning.  With the gasoline prices soaring each month, a question arises on whether or not it is economical to have the windows up and air conditioning on, or the other way around.

Well, most cars are designed to be aerodynamic, meaning it allows the car to pass through the air with minimum resistance.  Usually, when a vehicle has its windows down, the air passes into the car, allowing resistance that would not exist if the windows were up.  In addition, as this happens, you need to push on gas more, in order to gain speed. Therefore, most professionals advise that you lower the resistance on your car as much as possible since your engine will most probably have to work harder to accelerate.  If you keep the windows, the engine will not have to work as hard to gain speed and will work more efficiently.  Thus, it is more economical to have your windows up, plus, the noise level from the outside will not be heard a lot.

In case you have air conditioning problems, don’t hesitate to contact Pristine Auto repair shop in West Hollywood for air conditioning repairs.  Pristine Auto also services West Los Angeles and Beverly Hills clients for all automotive repair needs.

Which Gasoline – PREMIUM or REGULAR?

Premium or Regular Gasoline
Premium or Regular Gasoline?

First of all, let’s understand what premium and regular gasoline is.  Grades of gasoline are distinguished by their octane ratings.  For example, regular gasoline has the lowest octane rating, whereas premium gasoline has the highest.

Automobile manufacturers usually put a sticker on the gas filler lid that tells the owner which gasoline they recommend.  If the sticker is absent from the lid, it’s best to read the owner’s manual to determine whether the lowest grade is acceptable for your car.  In some engines, using lower grade gasoline will not damage your car, but will affect the performance.  However, with other engines, using a lower grade could do serious damage to your car engine.  Therefore, don’t jeopardize your engine by saving a couple of bucks at the pump, only to pay it much more at the auto repair shop.

If your car requires premium gas, in most cases, it will not hurt your car if you use regular once in a while.  Most new engines have knock sensors and computers that adjust settings and maximize performance.   However, listen to your engine working, if you hear knocking or pinging from it, switch to premium gas, which will usually have the clicking go away.  If it continues, take your car to your nearest repair shop and have it looked at.

Safety Checklist before Your Long Trip

Car Maintenance Checklist before Long TripBefore going on a long trip, your car needs a series of exams because even small problems may turn your trip into a nightmare.  There are a few small exams you can do on your car to make sure it’s ready for a long drive.  It’s very important not to leave the exam for the last moment, because there might be some things that need to be done which may take a day or two.  Therefore, it’s recommended that you do your car exam at least a few days before your trip.  Here are a few things that we, at Pristine Auto body shop recommend you check:

  1. Engine oil – if your oil needs to be changed anytime soon, then we recommend you change it before going on the trip.
  2. Transmission fluid – make sure you warm up the car first.  With the engine idling, check the fluid with the dipstick after wiping it clean.  If the fluid is darkish, then it’s time to change the transmission fluid altogether.  If it’s low, simply add some.
  3. Engine antifreeze or coolant – it’s usually visible and should be anywhere between minimum and maximum marks.
  4. Battery – make sure there aren’t any acid leaks
  5. Tires – tire pressure should be indicated on the tire or in the owner’s manual.  Also see if the spare tire and the jack are in good and working conditions.
  6. Emergency items – there are several emergency items that you may want to have in the car when going on a long trip such as: flashlight, jumper wires, tire repair kit, and a tool kit.
  7. Emergency Kit – make sure all the items in the emergency kit are within the expiration date.

And just in case you need auto body repairs done in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll make everything right for your car and make it ready for your long drive.

Improve Your Visibility and Ensure Your Safety

Windshield Repair by Pristine Automotive Inc.There are many different ways to ensure safety for you and your family members while on the road. It’s important that you do frequent washing of all your windows to improve visibility.  Also, replacing the washer fluid and the wiper blades twice a year will reduce the chances of an auto collision.  If there are many small cracks on the glass, it’s recommended that you take care of them right of way, because minor cracks turn into serious barriers.

Although the cracks and other chips in the auto glass can seem not important and not necessary to take care of, believe it or not, those small imperfections can turn into catastrophes when the road conditions change severely.  It’s very important to repair windshield cracks and chips immediately, especially the large ones; before the cracks or chips get any larger in time.

Small cracks or chips can be easily repaired by just injecting a polymer blend into the damaged area, but larger cracks need an immediate attention and would sometimes be necessary to replace the windshield.  Pristine Automotive Inc. is one of the best places you can have your windshield glass repaired or replaced since we do all auto body repairs in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills with the utmost professionalism and quality.
