Road Safety Tips to Follow Before You Hit the Road

road-safety-tipsEvery car owner should take following road safety tips seriously as driving is a big responsibility. Make sure your vehicle is ready for its next trip.

What do you need to check before driving?

Headlights: As the days get shorter and we have to drive more in the evening, night time, it’s crucially important to ensure that your headlights are ready for the night driving. You should not be concerned about driving at night if all works properly.

How to check if they work fine? Just power the car up, turn the lights to dipped and get out of the car and check that both the headlights and the tail lights are working.

Lights: However, to check all your lights such as indicator lights, tail lights, and brake lights, you might want to contact a professional. At Pristine Automotive, we will check everything to ensure that you can hit the road without worries.

Battery: Consider checking your vehicle’s battery. You would not want to stop somewhere on the road because you have a battery problem and can’t get your vehicle started, right? Battery terminals should be secure and clean.

Fluids: Check your fluids as well. We recommend you to get your fluids such as engine oil, clutch fluid, radiator fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and more checked by a professional as it’s not an easy task. You might miss something.

Tyres: Are your tyres in a good shape? Are they ready for the hot/cold weather? Make sure they are ready for winter, summer, long trips or anything you want them to serve you for.

Luggage: Never overload your vehicle with a luggage. Every vehicle has a luggage weight limit and you should be aware of it before you put your stuff into the car. Overloading can be dangerous.

Hope the above-mentioned tips were helpful and contact Pristine Automotive if you think that it’s time to get your vechile checked by professionals. You can find the list of all our auto services here.

Have You Installed Your Infant Car Seat Properly?

Child car seats have come a long way since they were first created and used, and today’s car seats, thankfully, are much safer and easier to use.  We have come to know many safe and useful things since the invention of the car seats. For example, now we know that children are much safer to ride in the back of the car, as opposed to the front.

Safe Seat ~ Happy Child

Here some more safety tips you might want to read about and also double checking if your child’s car seat has been installed properly.

There are essentially two types of car seats.  There is an infant car seat, made specifically for infants, which includes a handle for carrying the seat and also snaps in place to the base in the car.   This infant seat faces the rear of the car.  The other type of car seat is a convertible car seat, which can either face the rear or the front of the car.  This seat is big enough to ride your child until they reach the age/height when the seat is no longer needed.

Here are things you should consider looking for:

  1.  Make sure the car seat is less than 6 years old.  The past years of heat and cold make the car seat less effective, and if you buy a used car seat, you might want to check the age.
  2. When the baby is facing the rear of the car, make sure that the harness straps are connected to the car seat at the level of baby’s shoulders.  Also, the retainer clips should be high at the chest level.
  3. Check if you have strapped your baby tight enough by pinching the straps at the shoulders.  If you are able to pinch the straps, then you need to make the straps tighter.  The moment you are not able to pinch the straps, and your fingers slide over, then you have reached the proper tightness necessary to keep you baby safe.
  4. Make sure you don’t install the car seat with BOTH latch system AND seat belts.  You need to use either/or.  If you use both the latch and the seat belt, it will give more pressure on the car seat and prevent from the car seat to work properly in a potential crash.
  5. If you have leather seats, make sure you put something underneath the car seat, to ensure that the seat will not skid on the leather.
  6. Make sure that when you install the car seat, you are not able to move it more than an inch from the secured position.  Otherwise, you installed it incorrectly.
  7. Avoid attaching toys to the car seat, they are proven to be dangerous in crashes.  You may use the car seat toys provided by the car seat manufacturers, that have been tested  and are proven to be safe.

Remember that properly installed car seats will save your child’s life.

You might also want to bring your car to a reliable auto body repair shop, to inspect your vehicle for possible hazards which could prevent unwanted accidents.

Which Gasoline – PREMIUM or REGULAR?

Premium or Regular Gasoline
Premium or Regular Gasoline?

First of all, let’s understand what premium and regular gasoline is.  Grades of gasoline are distinguished by their octane ratings.  For example, regular gasoline has the lowest octane rating, whereas premium gasoline has the highest.

Automobile manufacturers usually put a sticker on the gas filler lid that tells the owner which gasoline they recommend.  If the sticker is absent from the lid, it’s best to read the owner’s manual to determine whether the lowest grade is acceptable for your car.  In some engines, using lower grade gasoline will not damage your car, but will affect the performance.  However, with other engines, using a lower grade could do serious damage to your car engine.  Therefore, don’t jeopardize your engine by saving a couple of bucks at the pump, only to pay it much more at the auto repair shop.

If your car requires premium gas, in most cases, it will not hurt your car if you use regular once in a while.  Most new engines have knock sensors and computers that adjust settings and maximize performance.   However, listen to your engine working, if you hear knocking or pinging from it, switch to premium gas, which will usually have the clicking go away.  If it continues, take your car to your nearest repair shop and have it looked at.
